The phone call you just heard took place in September of twenty twenty one between Chandler Holderson and his girlfriend Cat Melender. But now let's turn back the clock three months to June of the same year. Although it's true that the beginning of twenty twenty one saw the death toll from COVID nineteen in the United States surpass four hundred thousand, the vaccine was released right around the same time, and by June this vaccine had been out for nearly half a year. The United States, along with the rest of the world, was on its way to a full recovery. We were still masking up to protect the elderly and the vulnerable, but life was largely back to normal. Chandler Holderson, who had just turned twenty three years old in March, seemed to have everything going for him.

5:56 Yet in June of twenty twenty, one of which he might call unfortunate events came to pass for the young adults, a bad luck streak that rivals that of perhaps any individual in the course of human history. A quick recap, Chandler had just graduated from a two year technical college, Madison Area Technical College, who were MATC as it was known at the time. He took two and a half years to graduate, but he took summer classes buckled down in god his associate's degree in Computer information Technology, Administration and Management. He also received somewhat of a specialty certification and renewable energy and to top it all off, in twenty twenty he worked as a teacher's assistant for two months. But Chandler's academic achievements were soon to be eclipsed by a life changing event. Chandler had been offered his dream job, truly a dream job for anybody working in the technical field. He was hired by the company known as SpaceX, the SpaceX, and he was set to relocate his life to Titusville, Florida.

7:04 He would be earning an eighty thousand dollars a year salary, and him and Kat were already spending their evenings browsing Zillow together, picking out houses to view and possibly put a down payment on. A simple fall would change all of this. Not a metaphorical fall, but a literal one. Chandler was walking down the stairs from his room to the first floor of his parents' home, something he had likely done thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of times before, when he slipped, fell and smashed his head on the hard tile floor. That was June seventeenth of twenty twenty one. Chandler was seen at the emergency room at UW Health at the East Madison Hospital. In the blink of an eye, Chandler's entire future, as he knew it, was about to be taken away. Chandler hit his head so hard that he had a brain belief, a subdural hematoma. If you've listened to earlier seasons. You know this is no joking matter. He also had spinal cord damage and nerve damage.

8:09 He was treated by doctor Michael Lohmyer, who we will here testify. Doctor Lomyer told Chandler that in addition to kneading brain surgery, he would also eventually need to wear a colin oscoby back twenty four to seven, and he might even be confined to a wheelchair permanently as he had a very real risk of losing complete control of his legs. Chandler and his family were devastated. So further two weeks was that when he hurt his back when he fell, Yeah, pretty much started like right after he fell because like they can just say cat can't come over. It was a part of the recovery and like, hey pay us back, like because he had to he fell down the stairs in his head twice, bruises, ribs, had to wear like a neck breeze. They were obviously concerned and didn't want him doing a lot. So I think his dad was I don't know if I think. I don't know if he drove him to the hospital or called an ambulance. I think I have a picture of them together there. Oh, sorry, my brother's calling me. Do you know when he fell? Yes, June seventeenth, after before, because that's Ron Simon's picture was taken and he was just going on the stairs and fell. He was on the phone with his boss who was telling him to hurry up to his computer. So he's wearing down the wooden

9:39 stairs with socks. Yeah classic, yeah, okay, And so here he is at all with glory. Yeah. And then like the day before that, I was having problems because I had like a tailbone cyst, and so Wednesday I was over at the house. He was taking care of me. Yeah, and then he fell Thursday, and I went to urgent care again Friday to get it drained. I don't recommend it. Oh it sounds horrible, painful. M I could barely walk even laid down. And that was what which Thursday was that? So the seventeenth is a Thursday. So the eighteenth she got her sister drained. Yes, I have calendar. And then the sixteenth is the Wednesday I went to urgent care and he was taking care of me. So I'm I ask you a weird question. With him falling, he probably was going on the computer, But any kind of bounce in the house. His dad was downstairs at his computer. He was telling me about like ry Chandler call. He was like, that's not my computer.

11:01 It didn't sound bad. And then like I got up to like check after a while, and like he was on the floor and I was like, okay, mister Hollerson. Sure. Yeah. He doesn't say anything about it afterwards, like, hey, I really like I didn't just I didn't just slip on my socks. I actually no, Chandler's clumsy. Okay, it is not the first time he has fallen. He needs like a life alert with things. Okay, I've seen one of his many falls. What kind of symptoms was he reporting that he was feeling after that fall, tingles in his legs, sensitivity to light, Uh, some of your headaches, weakness?

11:58 Oh. Was Chandler able to physically do normal things around that time? No? What do you mean by that? He had a hard time lifting things and quite often would get lightheaded. Could he carry heavy things from what you observed or knew? No? Could he drive long distances things of that sort? No? Was he able to travel? No? Why do you know that or why do you say that? Because of the head injury and wearing the neck brace. Was there any discussion about how the concussion and the injury was going to affect SpaceX he wouldn't be able to travel down there?

12:46 Tell me about anything you remember about that type of discussion. Can you be more specifically? Yeah, what did Chandler specifically tell you about why he couldn't travel because he was wearing the neck brace and he had a concussion, so he shouldn't be flying. Same questions before about American Family and MTC. Did you ever see anything around Chandler's room on his phone, any documents records with the SpaceX or Tesla logo or anything like that. No, talk a little bit about houses and things of that sort. Were you aware at any point of Chandler had rented in an apartment? Yes, and tell me about that.

13:39 It was a two bedroom apartment and he put a down payment for it, and there's a little dog park so I could bring my dog Chibaka down. Okay, just briefly, could you just page through that and tell us kind of what dates these text messages are them? Throw on June thirtieth, June thirtieth of twenty twenty one, right, correct? All right? And these are the messages between you and Chandler? Correct, I'll move five to fourteen in evidence any objection, I'll bring up the same objection from the sidebar.

14:20 But otherwise no, and based upon the same ruling. They are received and they may be shown. I'm going to start showing them, and I'm going to ask for some context because we're picking up obviously in the middle of thousands of pages of messages. Maybe, but the first message is a message from you. To be honest, it's getting to the point where I want to text your mom directly. What was this about on June thirtieth, three eighteen in the afternoon, about him being grounded and not being able to see me or hang out. What was your understanding at that time of what was going on from Chandler? What did he tell you he was grounded? Yes? Okay, you communicate with Crystal a lot, right, Yes, when you say that, was Chandler telling you that or did you actually hear that from Christa or Bart from Chandler? Okay? And you say it's getting you the point where want to text your mom directly, and Chandler says, can you read that for me? It's fine, Bee, That'll only piss them off more. And what does he say, this weekend will be great?

15:24 That weekend was the fourth of July weekend, coming up right? Correct? You say, now we're still June thirtieth, We're about three nineteen in the afternoon. You say okay, and he says what thanks though, And then on June thirtieth you send this message. Next you say, I can ask if we can go to the farm right, correct? And that ended up coming to fruition. You did that, Yes, you read that last message you sent that way, we can say my mom can care for you since they have a lot of stuff here that they use for Mike and Papa.

16:12 Your mom and Chres testified. Who are Mike and Papa in general? And what did that mean that there was stuff there for them? Mike is Chres's brother and Papa is her father. Papa is elderly, he is over ninety years of age, and Mike is wheelchair bound and needs help going to the restroom, and overall my mom helps take care of them. What kind of stuff were you talking about that there was stuff there walkers if he needed one? Are those stools that you put over the toilet so an elderly person can sit down, or they don't have to squat solo since it's hard for their knees. Chandler Alderson could no longer fly on a plane. He also couldn't drive himself. The prospect of relocating to Florida for a job suddenly seemed improbable, if not impossible, but there was still a little hope. Chandler had actually already been officially hired by SpaceX at the time of his fall, and so he was already on their payroll. His foot was in the door, and he started doing some work from home in Madison for the company, online training, that kind of thing, but the brain injury made it hard for him to focus. He began committing numerous errors just in the training process, and suddenly his new employer, his dream job, contacted him to let him

17:42 know they were letting him go. Chandler had been fired for poor work performance before he ever really started showing you. What's been marked is exhibit number five hundred and sixteen. And I know it might be in a different form than usual, but in general, do you have an idea of what that is? Snapchat messages and who are they with Chandler and Chandler's to the best you can. I know these are people make up names. But what was Chandler's Snapchat name? Chashl Dazzle, Chazil Dazzle. I need you to tell us about Snapchat. I don't know what everyone's understanding is. Everyone's of different ages. Some people have a Snapchat, some people don't. Just in general, what is snapchat? Snapchat is a social media app where you can send photos with titles, or you can send messages through the chat part of the app.

18:36 On July first of twenty twenty one, at seven eleven, you get a message right from Chandler. Correct what does it say? How do you sleep? And you say I slept good? How did you sleep? And how does he respond? I hardly slept Okay? He gives you kind of an emoji face. You say, I'm sorry, b Why can you read Chandler's message back to you? After you say why, I don't know. Still hasn't really been going well for me lately, so I'm trying to plan for the next thing to fuck me over. Okay. After that, Chandler sends another message, Yeah, I just had a great future planned and it's falling apart okay, and you say no, it's not You're going to be okay here reassuring him right correct, Now we're up to seven fifty five in the morning. Right after you say that, Chandler say back to you, will you leave me even if it doesn't work? Wor did bad? But you understand? You respond, no, I would, and he says, I won't stop trying. Okay. Did you say why he lost the job

He said, while he was working after the injury, they found a lot of errors with what he was doing, and it looks like a page long or something like that, and so they were letting him go. Okay. When you say letting him go, were you under the impression that Chandler had actually started working at SpaceX? Yes, and remotely or how did that work? Remotely? But he told you he was losing that job that day. Yes, so he talked to you about his doctor's appointment that day. Yes. What did he say about that he was going to have lifelong like numbness to getting the job at SpaceX. Chandler had been working at a company called American Family Insurance, but he had quit that job to take the one at SpaceX. Now he had no job at American Family no job at SpaceX, and he was in a neck brace with really no prospects at all. But still, this was not the end of Chandler's troubles. His father Bart offered to help Chandler find a new job and asked his son to forward him his updated resume, a copy of his diploma and his transcripts, a seemingly simple request, yet not in this case. You see, Chandler had been trying to obtain a copy of his transcripts for nearly the past year.

21:42 We have dozens, perhaps hundreds of emails back and forth between Chandler and a man named Daniel Speith, who was helping Chandler get his transcripts and also updating the national Federal student database so that Chandler's student aid was paid out, something that had been held up because of some kind of database error at Madison Area Technical College. While Chandler had been emailing this man named Daniel Speith, a woman named Alyssa Brandt jumped into the thread to reach out to the financial aid manager directly. And if things weren't already convoluted enough, we'll also add an Aaron Hoover to this conversation. He worked with the Madison Area Technical College advisement team all the way back. On August twenty six of twenty twenty, after days of countless emails between Daniel Speith and Chandler, Bart asked him to forward their email thread to him, and on that day, Bart called Daniel Speith on the phone number he listed in his email and spoke to him directly.

22:45 There was something strange about this phone call. Now, of course, Bart Alderson is now deceased and so we can't hear it directly from him, but we have a copy of an email that he sent to his wife, Christa. He says, quote, the person we were supposed to meet with canceled. So Daniel Speith, the original person we were supposed to meet with, called me. He sounds just like Chaz on the phone. Jazz, of course, is the nickname that his parents and his girlfriend use for Chandler, because he's referred to as Chandler throughout the court proceedings. I chose to use that name in this podcast, but occasionally you will hear Chandler Holderson referred to as Jazz. Now, was this a strange coincidence that Daniel Speith sounded like Chandler? It would take almost another year for Bart Holderson to learn the true reason that Daniel Speith sounded exactly like his son, and this was not the only peculiarity in this email thread. It's easy for us now to look at these facts and wonder why Bart didn't catch them, But let's keep in mind he was working a full time job, he was married, with two children, two dogs, and a busy life. The answer perhaps lies and the reason any of us ignore small mistakes throughout her daily life. Either we overlook them, consider them a coincidence, or perhaps chrunk it up to a mistake. The first strange detail is that Elisa Brant, Daniel Speith, and

24:19 Aaron Hoover all sent their messages from Gmail accounts as opposed to official MTC email accounts. The second is that Alyssa Brandt's account as her last name is spelled b r a n d T, yet in her signature she spells her name without the D, just brn T. Again, these are minor mistakes, get in retrospect, the cracks and Chandler's story were beginning to show. Let's add our last p to this convoluted puzzle, American Family Insurance. We'll be right back after a quick break. Stick around. American Family was Chandler's first job out of college, the paid internship. He was working in their IT department. Despite holding down this job for over a year, Chandler had not received a single paycheck. Chandler also had a long email thread with a man at American Family named Tom Salesnick. Now Tom Salesnick didn't have a Gmail account, but he also didn't have an American Family email account. He had one registered with proton Mail, a site where like Gmail, anyone can sign up

25:51 for an account. Tom Salesnick explained that they actually had the wrong direct deposit information on file, so they got channed. There's correct information, but then they listed him as an hourly employee when he was supposed to be getting a salary. Finally, this issue was sorted out, but American Family owed Chandler so much money and back pay that when they finally sent the payment to Chandler's bank, the bank flag disaccount for fraud and put a hold on the money. I'm there almost all the time. I hang out with him and his parents. Like why he told you how like I wasn't over for like two weeks pretty much, but like I was still there having room peer flows with them. That one time I coaxed them Mexican traditional food before because my mom's an immigrant, I'm just there often. If I'm not there, he's hanging out with me, and like maybe we won't hang out like two three days a week. It's very variant. It depends on like if we're doing stuff with our families or if we have other plans. But like I said, I played Mario Kurt with his mom and dad, hang out with them sometimes, just have dinner with them. Okay, So what was the whole two week thing? Why weren't you allowed the owing money thing? So did he how did that come about? Why was that a big deal? Cause I thought yesterday you said that he's owed for like rent and Christmas presents and stuff like that. So why was it those two weeks? Yeah, because like

27:22 he was working uh for American family at the time. There was like problems with HR and how they weren't like paying him and like it was like they sent it in the mail, sent it to like not his address, so he was like, please cancel that check. Then he like tried getting them to like deposit it, and then at that point they owed him like a couple thousand dollars cause they were so far behind. And then I guess the company that they sent money through it was like, this doesn't seem legit. They thought it was a scam, and so his parents are like, you gotta give us that money cause we know you have money. But and so yeah, then he paid them, and it was just those two weeks that are like you have like strict okay, which is weird because like his mom's like, don't be spending money because you owe us money. But they're not really really, he said, it wasn't really his mom as more of his dad like on him. But his dad's also an accountant, so I'm not under stinking okay. To be read with Field, I appreciate that Chandler spent months trading emails with the head of human resources at American Family. Chandler's father, Bart, was actually an accountant himself, and all of this smelled incredibly fishy. He asked his son to send him the email exchange, which Chandler forwarded to him. On June eleventh, at eight fourteen am, Bart Holderson responded to a son's email saying, quote, unless there's something you were not telling us they have had ample time to pay you. Chandler never did get

28:56 the payment situation sorted out at American Family Insurance, and exactly five days after that email exchange with his father, Chandler would suffer the fall that would change the course of his life. And before we move on, one last thing about Tom Selsnick and his email signature. You know the one that you set up and you take some time to make sure it's all spelled correctly and formatted nicely. He listed himself as the Northeast Remote Human Resources Manager, except Tom Selsnick misspelled the word human resources. He spelled it human Recourses. One hundred and twenty ninth, twenty twenty one. After weeks of delays zoom meeting run arounds, phone call meeting run arounds, Bart Alderson decided to take this matter into his own hands. Instead of contacting Aaron Hoover, Alyssa Brandt or Daniel speith, Art decided to make a phone call directly to the Madison Area Technical College helped desk. Because of privacy laws, he knew he wouldn't be able to get any information unless he assumed his son's identity, which is exactly what he did. June twenty ninth, twenty twenty one, Bart Holderson learned that for the past three years, almost everything as Slyne had told him was a

The huskies are the chewy and nothing not husky. So I found out the Pomeranian husky misses. But they're like big. So I'm like, I thought they would be really small, like Chewi side, but they're not. It's kind of cool. Yeah, they're so fuzzy and they all sleep on the bed with me. But it's like a twin Excel bed, so it's not big. I knew someone in Plymouth that had one of those Pomeranian husky mixes. Yeah was it smaller big?
