Wednesday, July seventh, five days after his parents disappeared, Chandler Holderson walked into the Dane County Sheriff's Department and officially reported his parents as missing. Authorities sent out a missing person's alert and began an investigation. They interviewed neighbors, gathered ring doorbell camera footage, and began questioning who would soon become their key witnesses. It's on this same exact day that the Dane County Sheriff's Office reached out to the Langlade County Police, who had jurisdiction over the geographical area in which the Holderson cabin was located. Remember, Langlade County is about a three hour drive north of Madison. Deputies were dispatched and did a perfunctory visual survey of the outside of the house and found nothing out of order, but they hadn't yet gone inside. For that, they would wait one additional day. It's on the following afternoon, Thursday, July

7:10 eighth, that the eldest of the two Halderson brothers, Mitchell, took a road trip with his fiance from Madison County, Wisconsin, one hundred and seventy five miles north to lang Lake County to their parents lake house, located just a few steps away from Sawyer Lake on Thursday, July eighth. I was assigned to be a liaison for the Dane County Sheriff's Office. At that time, we were under the impression they were sending some personnel up. They ultimately called their personnel back to Dane County. But we may contact with two individuals at the Holderson property, and I conducted a search with those family members. Now do you remember the address of the Halderson property, Yes, ma'am.

7:50 It is at Sawyer Lake Road, which is in the township of Wolf River, Langlay County, state of Wisconsin. We are now going to move to published Exhibit twenty eight. This instruction applies to any and all audio or video exhibits which you may be viewing during this trial. You are about to hear and view an audio visual recording. Recordings are proper evidence, and you may consider them just as any other evidence. Listen carefully. Some parts may be hard to understand. You may consider the actions of a person, facial expressions and lip movements that you can observe on videotapes to help you determine what was actually said and who said it. You may proceed. I don't know a few they unfortunately we're just called them being afore they were just capad actually really yeah, okay, that's news too. That's actually something from the Shriff's office.

Mitchell and his fiance originally had a police escort from Dane County who is going to travel with them up to Langlafe County, but that escort was called away for a reason that we'll later find out. This is my first time at this property. I haven't seen anything. One thing that he mentioned I think would be a good idea is have you like walked around or anything yet? Yeah? I did. I walked around this quick. Okay, do you have a key or access? We we're hoping so, but now we found of said a key. You were hoping the right ones, but just gotcha. If it works for you, I just want to roll my windows up and lock my car. But maybe we could just take a walk around and see you and know the property probably better than we would. It's change a bit since I've been here, but yeah, sure. How long has like it been in the family. Oh, it's always been in the family since the forties.

10:01 Okay. Do you guys typically use it a lot or a few times a year? That's when my parents come up to haven't come in a while? Okay, if you had to guess, I mean, how long has it been since you were up here? Me personally? Probably five six years? Okay? Do do your parents regularly come up here? Yeah? They're coming here a few times a year, a few times yere okay, three or four. I don't remember if this is the first time this year or not. This is the third time this year, because I think your dad opened it and then came after its storm or something, okay, and then it came again. Sure, all right, Yeah, let me let me just grab my windows quick and then we'll take a look around and we'll go from there. Do you guys have a boat or anything up here? Yeah, that's what I wanted to try to get in there as well to see if any of our U boat host So yeah, I mean everything, let's feel pretty close enough, Like can you tell if the latches are on from that window? Probably could get in if you wanted us. Obviously there'd be some damage. We'd try to minimize it as best we could. But yeah, I think I honestly at least makes sense at this point. Yeah, to be safe rather than sorry, breman. Yeah, we were not going to drive a truck through a wall. But but no, unfortunate. If it's locked, we would have to do something. But I wouldn't expect the locks to be crazy strong anymore. Point is it just the pad lock on the front. It's just a padlock, okay? Yeah, and I have a pride bar, and we might have some other options. As Mitchell and the officers walked around the perimeter, they again checked the doors and the windows,

11:35 which were all locked. If they wanted to see what was inside the house, they were going to have to pry the lock off the front door, which is exactly what they did. I think I might just be able to pop that latch right off. The three officers who were unsecene threw their pistols and entered the cabin and found the cabin was in pristine condition. No one had been there in months, or if they had, they had done an excellent job of cleaning up. The officers then went to the boat house, which they searched thoroughly and found again nothing. They also checked the small shed in the front yard, which showed no signs of recent disturbance. There was one thing that the officers found outside the boat house. What the actual fuck is that water beetles? Are? Well? As it turns out,

13:05 the only thing of note that the officers found at the Holderson cabin was a large beetle outside the boathouse. It's probably a dumb question that you've been asked, but have you tried like phone condis him and they've been able to get a hold of them or okay, I started to forward you sure, do you know if they tried like paging their phones at all? Not mine at least? Well your sad at some point that they just shigne off the phone at some point, like you haven't heard anything about for sure? Get over there. Sure, yeah, that's that's probably something they're working on on, like a phone ping trying to get a location of where it's at. But while Mitchell was carrying out what would be an unsatisfying but we're leaving sirch at his parents cabin, Chandler spoke with the media for the first time and somewhat strangely requested that his face not be broadcast on television. Only a small part of Chandler's conversation was aired that night on the news, but because of how this case would turn out, there was interest in the full conversation, which the news organization later released online. The authorities are still searching for a Windsor couple who have not been seen in days. Fifty year old Bart Halderson his wife fifty three year old Christa were supposed to travel north last week and return home on Tuesday, but their son tells Tony Gally his parents whereabouts are unknown.

14:37 All I would really want to ask you is just if there's any information that you feel like, you know, would be worthwhile for us to share, anything that you feel like is important for us to share anything like that of that nature. So my last message I got from them they were going to White Lake for the fourth of July. There's some festivities that go around their better drink prices at the bars, stuff like that, or yeah, White Lake, Wisconsin. And then that their plan or from to my knowledge, they were going to Langlade County to a cabin, their cabin along the way. That could have stopped many places that I wouldn't know all of them.

15:26 But it's about three hours north of Madison or Dane County. And they left then a week ago today on the first Friday morning, So that would have been the Sackins right of July when they left, and that's the last you'd heard of them. And then was it yesterday that you called the sheriff's office or someone with your family called the sheriff's office just to actually got a text on them on Sunday telling me they were going to White Lake. I don't know when the text was sent because of reception issues that they would have and they usually turned their phone off because of pay for roaming. Yeah, they it could have been whenever they sent that message that they made it safely and they're going to White Lake for the fourth Okay. So yeah, so it was probably the last couple of days that you started to get it was then is there a people you know, you see comments, people say, you know, are they up north? Is the cell service bad? You know, could they you know, just not be able to get a hold of Is there anything that you feel like is kind of going on here that leads you to be a little bit more nervous that that's not the case.

16:34 My aunt went up there and was able to call me a while she was at the cabin, so she was able to call me. I don't know what provider she's using, but US Cellular would take up most of Wisconsin, so like they'd be able to call today. Is this weekend? It was packed? I get that packed. Maybe the weather wasn't great for messaging. Yeah, so who knows. And then the other thing I wanted to ask you about was that a lot of the comments people were concerned or kind of wanted some clarification about the vehicle, right because the reports from the Sheriff's office say they didn't have a car, or there wasn't a car with them they brought, or they were picked up by their friends. I never got the name of it, and I assumed it was someone I was aware of, like the close neighbors of theirs up the street, or their best friends down on the east side. So that's what I assumed. I never really asked any further in it into it. And so they got picked up and they all went up there by like another couple picked up here, yeah, here at my house. Okay, before I woke up, they had everything packed up and you don't know who who cheese. I mean that that has happened before, where they just kind of head out before leave or I wake up.

18:00 You know, I'm heavy sleeper. I'm on a schedule up at six to feed the dogs, and they were out before six. The rush to get to the north. We've gotten to know Christa and Bart's and even Mitchell to some extent. But what about the man at the center of this story. Chandler. Michael Holderson Chandler twenty three was born in Madison, Wisconsin, in the town of Windsor. Numerous news articles incorrectly listed as Windsor, Canada, but I could find nothing corroborating that Chandler was born outside the United States. While Chandler did attend college, he was the only one not to go to the University of Wisconsin Madison. Instead, he opted to pursue a degree in cybersecurity at the local Area Technical College. While perhaps not as prestigious as a traditional four year university, it was likely a more financially savvy decision.

18:59 On top of that, classes at technical colleges are more likely to be career oriented, and Chandler wasn't a slacker. In college, he went on to become a teacher's assistant. He helped his professor's hold office hours to answer questions, and for one particular professor, he even helped to develop an online teaching component for one of their courses. This ambition seemed to be a continuation of Chandler's work ethic. Before college, he held down numerous small jobs. He was an eagle scout, He worked as a swim instructor, and with the help of his uncle, he even obtained a scuba diving certification, which allowed him to later join the local Madison Police department as a volunteer scuba diver.

19:42 He was called in a number of times to personally help the police department search for evidence. Have you ever went scuba diving with your nephew, Chandler, Yes, how many times it was. I'm a scuba instructor. I was able to talk my brother into having him and his two sons trained or certified in scuba diving. I think it was in September of twenty nineteen. They had come up to my house I live in the outside of Appleton and the Hilbert area. They had done the online turning training. We did a pool session and then we did an open water session. Actually enough dives to get them certified as scuba divers. Did you and Chandler ever talk about him working with the police at all with scuba diving or anything like that. He told me he would scuba dive for the DNR and then sometimes help about the police through the DNR. Did he say what he would do for them, like specifically scuba diving, look in the lakes for stuff. Was this like a job or a volunteer thing. What was your understanding from Chandler? I believe it was a job and did he have this throughout the time you were dating during the summer. Were there ever times where Chandler would go to that job as far as you knew, or need to schedule time to be there.

21:14 Yes, how would that come up? He would just tell me he had to be on call days and we couldn't hang out those days, or he would only have seluckt time to hang out or else he be on call. Let's go back in time to a year that hardly a single person across the globe will soon forget, the year of a global pandemic. In the spring of twenty twenty, many colleges began to shudder their in person classes, and eventually they would move all students to online remote learning. This is a trend that would be adopted in not only the education system, but also the workforce.

21:56 It's the main reason that Chandler moved back in with his parents and was taking classes at home, and it's also the reason that bart Alderson was working from home at the time. Social separation was recommended by the medical experts to help slow the spread of the highly contagious COVID nineteen virus that was overwhelming hospitals. Chandler was living with his parents finishing up his last semester of his associate's degree. He took a little longer than the schedule two years. He was entering his third year, but he was just about to graduate. He had an internship that was paying him, and as we'll later find out, he just had a huge opportunity open up in his life. As twenty twenty turned into twenty twenty one, the world slowly began to reopen. Chandler was still living with his parents, but he began looking for other prospects for now.

22:49 Him and his father would get up at six am each morning, go to work together in their separate rooms, sending texts to each other throughout the day, checking in on each other, motivating each other. He's a Madison College student at ATC. They go by Madison College now if you didn't get the email, Madison College student. He's about to graduate. He's studying renewable resource engineering, kind of a hybrid IT degree with solar panels, things of that sort. He's about to get a certificate. Been working at American Family Insurance. He's working from home like most of us the last couple of years. If your dad works for home from home, if he was an accountant, for instance, which he was, you actually have to wake up early every day and go to work. So there he was messages between Bart and Chandler, Hey are you up for your meetings? Yeah. Chandler also always appeared to have a girlfriend who was both attractive and intelligent, and his girlfriend at the time, Kat Melender, was no exception. They had been dating for two years, and they had plans to move in together. You see, in addition to a solid education, a good starting job, and a steady girlfriend, Chandler had just landed what you might call his dream job in Titusville, Florida, working for none other than SpaceX. That's right, the SpaceX founded by one of the world's richest men. For kid who was living at home with his parents, this was the opportunity of a lifetime. Titusville is forty five minutes east of Orlando, right on the east coast of Florida, next to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center. Chandler was set to be

24:22 making eighty thousand dollars a year, and him and Kat began texting back and forth different houses in the Titusville area where they might build their future together. These messages with Chandler and you looks like back in May of this year. Yes, okay? And what is the first one that Chandler says, I have a good feeling about SpaceX. Okay, I'll move five oh six in evidence any objection subject to what was said on the record. Now you say I'm proud of you. What does Chandler say there, thanks, I hope I get a job. In general, were you hoping Chandler got this job? Yes? Why? He seemed excited about it. A lot of pay, A lot of pay. Did Chandler ever tell you how much money he'd be making at SpaceX? Around eight hundred thousand, eight hundred thousand. Sorry, I apologize eighty thousand, eighty thousand. Okay, So after you say me too, we're still in the twenty third he says, I'll be happy the job was in Florida, okay, and that would take you to Florida as well. Correct? Okay? Was it your intention to move with Chandler?

25:37 Yes? And on May twenty fourth, he sends you this message. What does it say, I have a follow up interview for Florida tomorrow twenty fifth, Now of May, you're saying, tell me kind of in an exaggerated fashion, but just tell me what's going on? Yes, And what does Chandler say? Shoot, sorry, I got the job and you say congratulations. The same day in twenty fifth, what does he say to you? I have training next week over the computer and I leave June eleventh and start on June fourteenth. Okay, what's Exhibit number five hundred and eight, a screenshot from Zillow of homes in Titusville, Florida. Okay, and it's a screenshot, but there's something else in that screenshot in the top right corner.

There? Homes for sale in Titusville, Florida. Yes, especially it's been marked this exhibit five hundred and nine. What's that pool? And was this another one of the homes you were looking at? Yes? The all American dream home ownership, financial stability, and a happy, healthy family. It was so close that Chandler and Kat could practically reach out and touch it. So how did we get to where we are today? Let's go to July eighth, twenty twenty one. It's been six days since Bart and Christa disappeared. Chandler is not necessarily arrested, but he's taken downtown with his girlfriend Kat for a more thorough interview. Kat and Chandler are picked up in two separate squad cars, which immediately sets Chandler on edge. He knew that police suspected him of something, but he didn't know how much they knew. Both Kat and Chandler's trips to the police station were recorded by cameras that were in the back of their respective police cars, and there's a stark difference in the demeanor between the two. Neither one had been told yet about the dismembered body parts that have been found on Kat's family's farm, but it's almost like Chandler

Chandler, who's around five to nine and real thin, sits stiff as a board in the back of the cruiser. He doesn't smile or make small talk. He stares down at his feet, occasionally his eyes darting out the backseat window. Officer, Yeah, what are they up to?

29:00 What are they up to? You know they went into the house, They just went behind it. Any neighbors see you or't hear anything today that you that was quiet? Didn't know, did you guys? You guys would No, not really, just the neighbor neighbors. Meanwhile, in the back of Cat Mellinger's squad car, she strikes up a jovial conversation with the officer in her front seat. She opens up about her life and background. In fact, and listening to this conversation, I probably learned more about Kat than I did through any Internet search or news article that I ever found. Under arrest, You're not like detained. We just want to talk and get to step out as soon as we can. I do not know what's going on downtown, And hopefully you guys go out for dinner tonight. Okay, okay, because I thought that was a plan for Okay, you guys are going to dinner whatever. Yeah, these guys, right, I give lots of rides. I'm a community deputy, so we do. We give a lots of rides. Am I allowed to take a photo of me back here?

30:23 And no, I don't know you that you just I think they were frown at me. Okay. I don't want to get you in trouble. I know I get in enough trouble. Yeah, I'm just gonna can I text my uh brother because I told him that I'm oh for sure going downtown and my mom's gonna cry. It's prob like safety building. Okay, So that's just where their offices are, and I think they want to run some things past your guys. I don't know. They didn't tell me anything. Also, I missed to call me, I call someone or no, I missed a call from the brother. Oh yeah ahead, thank you. Sorry, Minchin's driving up to The footage from Kat's car ride is about forty minutes long, so I won't play all of that for you. And anyways, the audio is not the best quality, but let me summarize what I learned.

31:19 Kad was born in August of two thousand at Saint Mary's Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Her mother was a Cnadulce is her mom's name, and we'll hear from her later. Kad went to a school called La Folette High School. His mascot was the Lancers. She works for UW Health as a pharmacy tech and was training to be a pharmacist. It's not exactly relevant to this story, but thought it was interesting that she said her grandfather worked for the Sheriff's department, yet another person in law enforcement in the story. Her dad was in the military and her older brother was a cop in Saint Louis. Catherine metscham through one of Chandler's exes, and it seemed like there was a little bit of drama around that that she doesn't necessarily get too far into. She met Chandler, they bonded over Star Wars, she was a theater kid, and they fell in love. So the story goes, what did you guys meet It's a long story we tell people through school, but long story short.

32:28 One of my close friends used to be his ex. She's not a good person, not gonna lie, but yeah, she was very manipulative and like whenever he would try to break up with her because he wasn't happy, she would threaten to take her own life. Yeah, and like we all thought he was this awful, horrible person, and then like I finally met him in person, and I was like, oh, we both really liked Star Wars, Yeah, KT Flud Star Wars Active, Big Years rob Li Kat was in the student Senate and was vice president of teen development in high school. As you can probably tell, she was just as ambitious, if not more so, than Chandler. When they arrived at the station, both Kat and Chandler's interrogations were recorded. Only one of them would be leaving the precinct as a free person. That very night, Chandler was taken into custody for providing false information on a missing person's case, and police officially announced that the disappearance of Bart and Christa was quote suspicious. What we now know in retrospect is that almost at the exact same time that Chandler and Kat were being interviewed, police were searching the property at Cottage Grove where Chandler and his girlfriend had spent the Fourth of July holiday. What they found was the stuff of nightmares. And you'll hear from the detective, Detective Brett Baverstock, who was out there, and he'll tell you that his eyes kind of shifted up and

34:02 he saw vultures. And I promise the photos are only going to go this far for right now. But the police walked about twenty yards into the woods, and in that pile of debris, under dozens of sticks, bushes and dirt, they found Bart Halders.
