S7, Chapter 1: Jacob Jeremiah Landin
I want to tell you...
Part 1-of-4.
I want to tell you a true crime story that is close to me. Closer than perhaps any story I’ve told so far. It’s the story about the death of my friend’s brother.
In 1987, Jacob was killed when he was only nine-months-old. His brother, Eric, was only six at the time—but, shockingly, he was blamed for his baby brother’s death.
This is Eric and Jacob's story.
This story is told in collaboration with Eric Carter-Landin.

00:00:01.159 --> 00:00:05.240
I had to open the bruise up
and let some of the blues blood come
2
00:00:05.240 --> 00:00:14.000
out to show them. Tapes from
the Dark Side contains descriptions of violence and
3
00:00:14.199 --> 00:00:28.239
sexuality. Listener discretion is advised.
Why don't we start with you telling me
4
00:00:28.320 --> 00:00:34.159
about Jacob, what you remember about
him. I just remember he was funny,
5
00:00:34.240 --> 00:00:39.799
and he liked to laugh, and
he liked to put drawers and make
6
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:45.840
all silverware flay out, and he's
just a silly boy. Is really smart.
7
00:00:47.359 --> 00:00:50.920
The two voices you're hearing right now
are that of Eric and his mother,
8
00:00:51.039 --> 00:00:54.359
Brenda, and they're discussing their loss. In Eric's case, of his
9
00:00:54.520 --> 00:01:00.600
brother and Brenda her son, Jacob
Jeremiah Lyndine, who died when he was
10
00:01:00.759 --> 00:01:03.319
only nine months old, and like
the whole thing backwards and just lay there
11
00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:11.879
and laugh, flip it over and
he'd be like his little laugh. Yea,
12
00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:15.680
his laugh was amazing. It brought
me joy just to hear it.
13
00:01:17.719 --> 00:01:21.400
He was so happy. He was
happy. Little baby, well, big
14
00:01:21.439 --> 00:01:23.879
baby, yeah, he was big. It was big. It was ten
15
00:01:23.959 --> 00:01:34.840
pounds, like huge for me.
I remember right before you got pregnant and
16
00:01:34.920 --> 00:01:40.120
I told you, mom, I'm
gonna have a brother. Yeah, And
17
00:01:40.200 --> 00:01:45.159
he didn't believe me. I thought
it was going to be a girl and
18
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:49.959
I was a boy. Sure you're
right. Today, I want to tell
19
00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:55.400
you a true crime story that is
close to me, closer than perhaps any
20
00:01:55.400 --> 00:01:59.719
other story I've told so far.
The reason for that being that it's the
21
00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:05.319
story worry the death of my friend
Eric's brother, Jacob was killed in nineteen
22
00:02:05.400 --> 00:02:08.599
eighty seven, and Eric was only
six years old at the time. His
23
00:02:08.759 --> 00:02:15.719
mother, Brenda was only twenty five, But shockingly, Eric was blamed for
24
00:02:15.800 --> 00:02:20.719
his baby brother's death. Most of
us barely remember what it was like to
25
00:02:20.759 --> 00:02:23.840
be six years old. You're getting
your first glimpse of the larger world.
26
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:30.240
You maybe have just started dressing yourself, can tie your own shoes, perhaps
27
00:02:30.240 --> 00:02:34.759
for the first time, and you're
just beginning to develop an understanding of your
28
00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:42.080
place in the world. Imagine suddenly
you're blamed for physically abusing your brother,
29
00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:45.960
your mom sends you away to a
strange city to live with your dad,
30
00:02:46.039 --> 00:02:52.439
who was now divorced from your mother, and then the devastating news you find
31
00:02:52.439 --> 00:02:58.719
out your brother has died suddenly in
what is called an accident. I remember
32
00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:05.960
being I remember being very confused,
and you know, I think you know
33
00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:09.120
me better than most people, and
I, especially at that age, really
34
00:03:09.159 --> 00:03:15.319
wanted to make everybody around me happy. And so I think I said what
35
00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:19.240
people wanted me to say or what
was being said to agree with him,
36
00:03:19.240 --> 00:03:23.439
because I didn't want to cause problems. This is kindergarten time. I remember
37
00:03:23.479 --> 00:03:25.639
that because I remember I love my
kindergarten teacher. She was so cool.
38
00:03:27.560 --> 00:03:31.400
And then I had to go to
California and get a new teacher. Yeah,
39
00:03:31.439 --> 00:03:38.560
it's not I felt that I needed
to remove you because even if something
40
00:03:38.599 --> 00:03:42.120
would happen, I don't want you
to be blamed. And I knew that
41
00:03:42.719 --> 00:03:46.120
he would use you and blame you
no matter what regardless. So you call
42
00:03:46.199 --> 00:03:51.400
my dad, Yeah, I called
you Dad and myself. You know this,
43
00:03:51.520 --> 00:03:54.080
and this is happening, and I
don't know what's going on, but
44
00:03:54.479 --> 00:04:01.159
I want or a gremove from this
situation because I just I couldn't understand what
45
00:04:01.280 --> 00:04:04.680
was happening, and I kept hearing. You know, he dropped him,
46
00:04:04.719 --> 00:04:08.879
He picked him up out the crib, he dropped him. I walked by,
47
00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:12.680
he kicked him. You know,
everything was like Eric did this,
48
00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:16.040
Eric did that, and Eric's O
jealous and you know it wasn't true,
49
00:04:16.600 --> 00:04:21.279
and so I had to make sure
that no matter what happened, you were
50
00:04:21.319 --> 00:04:29.000
protected. How exactly did nine month
old Jacob die and why was Eric a
51
00:04:29.079 --> 00:04:35.560
six year old claimed for his death? Let's investigate. On April seventh,
52
00:04:35.639 --> 00:04:42.279
nineteen eighty seven, Jacob Lendin died
from a brain injury, a subdural hematoma,
53
00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:45.399
which is a build up of blood
on the surface of the brain.
54
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:49.560
When blood pools in the space between
the protective layers and the brain, it
55
00:04:49.600 --> 00:04:56.279
increases pressure on brain tissue. Essentially, our rigid skull offers no release valve,
56
00:04:56.720 --> 00:05:00.399
and so when the brain is squeezed, the blood flown to slow The
57
00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:04.680
compression of the brain creates a lack
of oxygen rich blood, which in and
58
00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:12.360
of itself creates additional swelling. This
pressure eventually forces the brain to travel down
59
00:05:12.680 --> 00:05:15.879
through the small hole at the base
of the skull, which is called the
60
00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:20.160
Fraymen magnum. This is an oval
opening through which the brain is connected to
61
00:05:20.199 --> 00:05:25.920
the spine, and when brain matter
comes into contact with a bone around this
62
00:05:26.040 --> 00:05:30.680
opening, it's often too late.
Brain function is already severely compromised, and
63
00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:35.839
because we need the brain to control
breathing and heart rate death often occurs,
64
00:05:36.720 --> 00:05:42.519
and in Jacob's case, death did
occur. He was only nine months old
65
00:05:42.560 --> 00:05:47.000
when he died. Although this story
is filled with tragedy, it also has
66
00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:51.000
many twists and turns that I think
make it one of the most compelling true
67
00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:56.480
crime stories that we've covered to date. But before we begin, I want
68
00:05:56.519 --> 00:06:00.680
to make a note that creating this
episode presented me with what might have been
69
00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:05.720
my greatest challenge to date, and
that is because of my friendship with Eric.
70
00:06:05.800 --> 00:06:10.199
I knew I was starting off with
a bias, and no matter how
71
00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:14.040
clear cut a case might seem on
the surface, I do believe there are
72
00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:18.720
two sides to every story. I
did my best to balance my pre existing
73
00:06:18.759 --> 00:06:24.199
notions and come at this case with
a fresh set of eyes. I intentionally
74
00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:29.879
avoided reading any coverage of this case
from other podcasts so that I could at
75
00:06:29.959 --> 00:06:33.680
least try to present an unbiased account. But with that being said, I'm
76
00:06:33.720 --> 00:06:39.680
sure that there is some bias on
my part, and I want to acknowledge
77
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:44.040
that. With that being said,
I'm honored to present to you the case
78
00:06:44.120 --> 00:06:57.399
of Jacob Jeremiah Lendin. I think
everyone has a bit of a fascination of
79
00:06:57.480 --> 00:07:14.720
the dark side. Let's start with
the facts of the case. In April
80
00:07:14.759 --> 00:07:18.720
of nineteen eighty seven, New Mexico
State Police officer sued to Walt was assigned
81
00:07:18.759 --> 00:07:23.959
to investigate the death of Jacob Blundein, a nine month old baby who had
82
00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:30.319
died from quote a blow to the
head. That autopsy report reads Jacob Blundein
83
00:07:30.480 --> 00:07:34.079
died of a subdural hematoma, which
compressed the brain and caused irreversible damage.
84
00:07:34.680 --> 00:07:41.439
The autopsy examination also revealed the evidence
of an old, partially healed subdural hematoma,
85
00:07:41.680 --> 00:07:45.639
as well as a partially healed skull
fracture and a healing fracture of the
86
00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:50.920
fifth rib. The microscopic characteristics of
all the healing injuries indicated that they occurred
87
00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:56.519
approximately three to four weeks prior.
It could not be determined solely on the
88
00:07:56.560 --> 00:08:01.000
basis of the autopsy that these injuries
occurred at the same time, but their
89
00:08:01.040 --> 00:08:05.279
ages suggested that they did. The
coroner reported that the skull fracture and the
90
00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:11.920
old subdural hematoma were directly related and
that these injuries were possibly associated with an
91
00:08:11.920 --> 00:08:20.800
episode or episodes of child abuse.
The healing phase of the subdural hematoma is
92
00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:26.720
particularly susceptible to re hemorrhaging with trauma
of a lesser degree than usually required to
93
00:08:26.759 --> 00:08:31.159
cause severe head injuries, and such
an acute reaccumulation of blood within the subdural
94
00:08:31.240 --> 00:08:39.000
space was deemed at least partially responsible
for Jacob's death. Jacob had died from
95
00:08:39.080 --> 00:08:43.120
some kind of blow to the head, but what the autopsy uncovered was equally
96
00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:48.519
horrifying. It pere Jacob had been
the subject of severe and repeated physical abuse,
97
00:08:48.919 --> 00:08:52.039
and so the obvious question becomes,
who would want to hurt a nine
98
00:08:52.039 --> 00:08:58.399
month old baby. Sue de Wald
was assigned as the investigating officer, and
99
00:08:58.519 --> 00:09:03.240
her report gives us a firsthand look
at exactly what happened on the day that
100
00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:09.480
Jacob was killed. From to Walt's
report. At eleven thirty eight pm,
101
00:09:09.519 --> 00:09:16.279
I interviewed Brenda Valerie Lundein, mother
of Jacob Lundein, at the University of
102
00:09:16.279 --> 00:09:22.360
New Mexico Hospital. Brenda is employed
as a checker at the Supermart in Skora,
103
00:09:22.519 --> 00:09:26.159
usually working three to nine pm.
However, on this day she was
104
00:09:26.200 --> 00:09:30.759
scheduled to work eleven am to seven
thirty pm. Her mother, mer Linda,
105
00:09:31.000 --> 00:09:35.159
normally babysits Jacob while Brenda's working.
Brenda's stated on this day she told
106
00:09:35.159 --> 00:09:39.240
her mother to take the baby to
John, who is Brenda's boyfriend with whom
107
00:09:39.240 --> 00:09:43.480
she lives, if she wanted to
go to church. A quick note here
108
00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:48.879
that the name John is a pseudonym. I have been asked by Eric at
109
00:09:48.919 --> 00:09:52.840
this time to not use this person's
real name, and so we will simply
110
00:09:52.879 --> 00:09:56.679
refer to him as John. Brenda
said her mother took the baby to John
111
00:09:56.799 --> 00:10:03.360
at approximately six pm. Approximately seven
pm, John entered the Supermark where she
112
00:10:03.480 --> 00:10:07.440
works in hysterics and told her the
baby was in an ambulance and not breathing.
113
00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:13.039
John told her that Jacob had fallen
off the couch. So I was
114
00:10:13.159 --> 00:10:20.080
chunking out the customer. I heard
the ambulance as by. At that moment.
115
00:10:20.519 --> 00:10:26.360
He run into the store. He
said, ambulance. I don't know
116
00:10:26.399 --> 00:10:31.200
what happened. I said, what
do you mean? Jucubs in the ambulance
117
00:10:31.720 --> 00:10:35.600
and he just he said, we
gotta go, we gotta go, and
118
00:10:35.679 --> 00:10:39.519
I just ran out the store.
I left the customer there. I don't
119
00:10:39.519 --> 00:10:46.759
know what happened. I just left
and I got to the er and my
120
00:10:46.840 --> 00:10:50.200
mom and dad were there. I
don't even know how they got there or
121
00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:56.559
what happened. And Jacob was in
the room and I walked in and I
122
00:10:56.679 --> 00:11:03.600
touched my baby, and he took
a deep breath. Why can't you Mama.
123
00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:15.320
Mama was there with him. There
defly him to Albuquerque. They took
124
00:11:15.399 --> 00:11:20.559
him to Presbyterian and the injuries were
so bad to lift them to you and
125
00:11:20.600 --> 00:11:28.279
I'm trauma sinner. So Jacob was
airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital
126
00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:35.120
and he was rushed into emergency surgery. He didn't make it. He died
127
00:11:35.159 --> 00:11:39.320
shortly after they took him in for
surgery. So from my perspective as a
128
00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:45.159
six year old, I was asleep
in my bed in California. My dad
129
00:11:45.159 --> 00:11:48.399
woke me up to tell me that
there had been a terrible accident and that
130
00:11:48.519 --> 00:11:52.679
my brother was being rushed to the
hospital. I didn't really understand what happened,
131
00:11:52.720 --> 00:11:56.039
but my dad told me that I
needed to get my stuff together so
132
00:11:56.080 --> 00:12:00.240
that we could go back to New
Mexico. I believe it was that same
133
00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:05.080
morning we jumped on a flight and
went back to Albuquerque. I remember that
134
00:12:05.120 --> 00:12:09.000
there was a state police officer along
with my mom and my grandmother waiting for
135
00:12:09.039 --> 00:12:11.679
us. At the airport. As
soon as we got there, my mom
136
00:12:11.720 --> 00:12:20.639
told me what had happened. Jacob
passed away overnight. My sweet little brother
137
00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:26.840
was gone. And I'll never forget
that day. I'll never forget that feeling.
138
00:12:28.039 --> 00:12:33.279
If Eric was in a different state, a different time zone, how
139
00:12:33.320 --> 00:12:35.960
could he be blamed for his brother's
death. Coming up, we will hear
140
00:12:37.039 --> 00:12:41.360
firsthand from John's first interview with police, in which he explains in his own
141
00:12:41.399 --> 00:12:48.679
words, exactly what happened during that
mysterious one hour time period from six pm
142
00:12:48.799 --> 00:13:00.440
to seven pm on April ninth,
nineteen eighty seven. Stay with us Before
143
00:13:00.440 --> 00:13:03.120
we dive into John's interview with police, I thought it'd be helpful for you
144
00:13:03.200 --> 00:13:09.000
to have a bit of background information
about John's relationship with the Landine family.
145
00:13:09.480 --> 00:13:13.759
You see, John was not just
a random boyfriend of Brenda's. He was
146
00:13:13.799 --> 00:13:18.879
a longtime family friend, and his
history was intertwined with that of the Landin's
147
00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:24.039
going back decades. Eric's father,
Jean, was a preacher in the Pentecostal
148
00:13:24.159 --> 00:13:28.279
church, and John's father was also
a preacher. John's father was a mentor
149
00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:33.240
towards Jean and helped him to get
established in his career in the church.
150
00:13:33.960 --> 00:13:37.320
Jean, Brenda, and John were
all friends growing up. Jean and Brenda
151
00:13:37.360 --> 00:13:43.440
would get married and have kids,
Eric and later Jacob, but things went
152
00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:48.120
south when Jean began having an emotional
affair with another woman and Brenda found out
153
00:13:48.159 --> 00:13:54.559
about it. This became the impetus
for their divorce and was also a motivating
154
00:13:54.600 --> 00:13:58.600
factor in Brenda's decision to start dating
John. She wanted to get back at
155
00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:03.879
Jeane. She wanted to show him
the emotional pain that he had caused her,
156
00:14:03.559 --> 00:14:07.840
and what better way than by dating
one of his closest friends. But
157
00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:13.519
this also opposes a question what kind
of friend would so readily jump at the
158
00:14:13.559 --> 00:14:18.240
opportunity to date their good friend's ex
wife. I talked with Eric directly to
159
00:14:18.279 --> 00:14:22.480
get more information on the relationship between
his father, Jean, his mother,
160
00:14:22.600 --> 00:14:30.399
Brenda, and John. So,
my mom and dad they were very young
161
00:14:30.440 --> 00:14:33.720
when they got married. My mom
was seventeen, I think my dad was
162
00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:41.279
maybe twenty, and my dad had
aspirations of being like a really famous televangelist.
163
00:14:41.120 --> 00:14:45.000
That was his goal, and so
he spent a lot of time on
164
00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:50.399
the road, and my mom was
stuck with me and Jacob trying to figure
165
00:14:50.440 --> 00:14:52.919
out how to feed us because she
couldn't work because she had a baby and
166
00:14:54.240 --> 00:14:58.279
a preschooler. You know, there
were times where we didn't have any food
167
00:15:00.159 --> 00:15:03.960
house and we didn't know where we
were going to get food from. And
168
00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:09.120
then my mom finds out through John
that my dad was having an emotional affair
169
00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:13.519
with another woman. I don't believe
that it was a physical affair. I
170
00:15:13.600 --> 00:15:16.759
think that they were just spending a
lot of time together. But for my
171
00:15:16.840 --> 00:15:22.720
mom it was very it was a
betrayal. It was a huge betrayal of
172
00:15:22.759 --> 00:15:26.240
her trust. You know, she's
struggling to keep food on the table,
173
00:15:26.360 --> 00:15:31.440
struggling to keep hold of the house
and take care of the kids and all
174
00:15:31.440 --> 00:15:35.639
this other stuff, and my dad's
just out hanging out with his friends.
175
00:15:35.759 --> 00:15:43.480
So she laughed, and she did
see John as this potential revenge against my
176
00:15:43.600 --> 00:15:46.879
dad. She wanted to hurt him
in the way that he hurt her.
177
00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:56.039
And John was already grooming her for
this anyway, Like he swooped in as
178
00:15:56.039 --> 00:15:58.440
soon as she came to down and
started trying to sweep her off her feet.
179
00:16:00.879 --> 00:16:03.320
I think that's where my mom's motivation
was. It was probably due to
180
00:16:03.360 --> 00:16:08.440
her age and her heart being broken
and all the pain that she endured and
181
00:16:10.039 --> 00:16:14.559
stressed that she had and how old
was she and how old were you at
182
00:16:14.600 --> 00:16:18.600
that time? So she's twenty years
older than me, So I was five
183
00:16:18.840 --> 00:16:29.639
and she was twenty five. And
then because Jacob is your full brothers,
184
00:16:29.720 --> 00:16:34.240
so there was a time when she
got back together with your dad while dating
185
00:16:34.360 --> 00:16:40.840
John. No, Jacob was born
before that. Oh, okay, okay,
186
00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:45.279
true, so it would have been
right right at that time. Basically,
187
00:16:45.480 --> 00:16:51.639
Jacob was about three months old when
they separated. Okay, can you
188
00:16:51.679 --> 00:16:56.720
tell me about John's relationship with your
mom, which is something I didn't know
189
00:16:56.879 --> 00:17:00.279
you You were telling me where we
were chatting, that she actually knew him
190
00:17:00.919 --> 00:17:03.839
from childhood, which I thought it
was just kind of like this boyfriend who
191
00:17:03.920 --> 00:17:07.839
she had just met. Can you
give us a little bit of background on
192
00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:11.440
that. So his dad was a
minister in town. My mom, my
193
00:17:11.519 --> 00:17:15.160
grandma, my grandpa, my aunts
and uncles. They all went to the
194
00:17:15.240 --> 00:17:22.680
church, so the kids all grew
up together. His sister married my mom's
195
00:17:22.799 --> 00:17:30.599
brother. His aunt is my godmother, So we had known this family.
196
00:17:30.640 --> 00:17:33.279
We had known him for a long
time. He was also my dad's best
197
00:17:33.319 --> 00:17:37.359
friend and my dad was being mentored
by his dad. My dad was a
198
00:17:37.359 --> 00:17:41.400
preacher. He was trying to get
in there and try to become, you
199
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:45.839
know, this big evangelist. And
so this person was not a stranger.
200
00:17:45.920 --> 00:17:51.400
This person was somebody that we all
knew. It was somebody my whole family
201
00:17:51.480 --> 00:17:57.839
knew. Did you know his father
edel Yes? Yeah, what what was
202
00:17:57.880 --> 00:18:03.319
that relationship like? Had you ever
seen his father be abusive to anyone?
203
00:18:04.559 --> 00:18:11.599
No? No? And I think
that probably John was abused at some point.
204
00:18:12.599 --> 00:18:18.799
I believe that in my heart.
I think that's why he behaves the
205
00:18:18.839 --> 00:18:22.319
way that he does. But I
don't know that it was his father.
206
00:18:22.559 --> 00:18:34.640
It could have been anybody from Sue
to Waltz. Police report. I interviewed
207
00:18:34.680 --> 00:18:40.960
John living, boyfriend of Brenda Landine. John has been living with Brenda since
208
00:18:41.079 --> 00:18:45.039
late December or January of nineteen eighty
seven. He's employed as a maintenance man
209
00:18:45.119 --> 00:18:49.559
for the County of Sakora. John
states Brenda's mother bron Jacob to him at
210
00:18:49.599 --> 00:18:55.759
approximately six pm. He seemed to
be failing all right. John put him
211
00:18:55.759 --> 00:19:00.160
in his walker and gave him a
teething cookie in his bottle. John was
212
00:19:00.200 --> 00:19:03.960
on the floor dubbing some cassette tapes
for his brother the baby was playing in
213
00:19:03.960 --> 00:19:07.720
the living room and his walker.
One of the wheels kept getting stuck in
214
00:19:07.720 --> 00:19:11.119
the box which contains the tapes.
John stated he moved the baby away from
215
00:19:11.160 --> 00:19:15.920
the tapes, but the baby kept
wanting to play with him. John took
216
00:19:15.920 --> 00:19:18.799
the baby out of the walker and
placed him on the floor behind him.
217
00:19:18.400 --> 00:19:22.759
He gave the baby two or three
old tapes to play with, his teeth
218
00:19:22.799 --> 00:19:26.759
and cracker and his bottle. After
playing on the floor for a while,
219
00:19:26.839 --> 00:19:30.759
the baby became sleepy. John stated
he picked the baby up and was carrying
220
00:19:30.880 --> 00:19:36.599
him to the bedroom when the tape
clicked. John put the baby on the
221
00:19:36.599 --> 00:19:41.000
couch and went to change the tape. He then heard the baby make noise,
222
00:19:41.559 --> 00:19:45.039
and when he turned around, the
baby was lying on the floor between
223
00:19:45.039 --> 00:19:48.240
the couch and the coffee table.
John stated he picked the baby up and
224
00:19:48.359 --> 00:19:53.119
saw a yellowish liquid coming from his
mouth and nose. He turned the baby
225
00:19:53.160 --> 00:19:56.200
over and pattered him on the back
in an attempt to clear his mouth.
226
00:19:57.079 --> 00:20:00.680
He said the baby's eyes were rolling
back into his head, so he ran
227
00:20:00.759 --> 00:20:04.079
to the neighbor's house with the baby
to have them call the rescue unit.
228
00:20:04.519 --> 00:20:08.200
The baby was throwing up and John
placed him on the floor and tried to
229
00:20:08.240 --> 00:20:14.119
clear his throat and gave him mouth
to mouth resuscitation. He said the neighbor
230
00:20:14.200 --> 00:20:18.200
also attempted to revive the baby.
After the rescue unit arrived, John went
231
00:20:18.279 --> 00:20:23.160
to the supermart to notify Brenda of
what had occurred. John stated he did
232
00:20:23.160 --> 00:20:27.160
not know if the baby had struck
his head on the coffee table. It's
233
00:20:27.160 --> 00:20:32.480
at this point in the police report
that there's a market shift in focus from
234
00:20:32.559 --> 00:20:40.000
John and what happened on that particular
night to Eric. John is aware of
235
00:20:40.079 --> 00:20:44.839
two previous injuries to the baby,
both of which he believes were inflicted by
236
00:20:44.839 --> 00:20:48.440
the six year old brother Eric.
The first injury was the first part of
237
00:20:48.480 --> 00:20:52.720
March. His children were visiting and
he was taking care of Jacob and Eric
238
00:20:53.240 --> 00:20:57.640
Brenda was not home. He took
his children home, leaving Jacob with Eric
239
00:20:57.720 --> 00:21:02.680
for a short time. The next
day, Brenda noticed the baby had a
240
00:21:02.799 --> 00:21:07.519
skinned ear, and she took the
baby to the doctor. John stated Brenda
241
00:21:07.640 --> 00:21:11.119
finally was able to get Eric to
admit he had taken the baby out of
242
00:21:11.160 --> 00:21:15.359
the crib and dropped him. John
stated the second injury occurred two or three
243
00:21:15.359 --> 00:21:21.039
weeks later, on Saturday night.
Jacob was fussy, so Brenda gave him
244
00:21:21.079 --> 00:21:25.640
some medication and went back to sleep. On the next day, Sunday,
245
00:21:25.799 --> 00:21:30.000
Brenda's mother felt he had a soft
spot and knocked on his head. Brenda
246
00:21:30.079 --> 00:21:34.400
took him immediately to the doctor,
who treated the injury and advised Brenda that
247
00:21:34.559 --> 00:21:38.519
came from a blow to the head. Jacob was in the hospital for a
248
00:21:38.559 --> 00:21:42.960
couple of days. According to John, when Brenda came home, she asked
249
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:47.880
Eric if he had done something to
the baby. Initially, Eric said no,
250
00:21:48.279 --> 00:21:52.000
and Brenda talked to him about lying. Eric asked her what would happen
251
00:21:52.039 --> 00:21:56.400
if he was lying, and she
told him if he told the truth,
252
00:21:56.480 --> 00:22:00.000
he would not be in trouble.
Eric then admitted he had kicked the baby.
253
00:22:00.599 --> 00:22:03.480
He said his father told him,
when someone hurts you, you hurt
254
00:22:03.519 --> 00:22:08.839
them back. Jacob was pulling Eric's
hair, so Eric kicked him. John
255
00:22:08.960 --> 00:22:12.559
stated they took Eric to the hospital
when they went to pick up Jacob.
256
00:22:14.279 --> 00:22:17.920
When Jacob came out with his head
bandage, John said Eric seemed to be
257
00:22:17.960 --> 00:22:22.319
scared. After that, Brenda sent
Eric to live with his father in California.
258
00:22:22.759 --> 00:22:27.119
John stated he knows of no other
injuries or broken bones that Jacob had
259
00:22:27.880 --> 00:22:32.759
Jacob has not been well since the
first head injury. He has been fussy,
260
00:22:33.200 --> 00:22:37.440
vomiting frequently, and had an ear
infection, consilitis and an allergic reaction
261
00:22:37.480 --> 00:22:41.680
to the medicine. John said he
has two children who he sees frequently,
262
00:22:42.000 --> 00:22:47.599
and they have not had any unusual
injuries. He does not know how Jacob
263
00:22:47.720 --> 00:22:51.039
was injured this time, except that
he must have hit his head on the
264
00:22:51.079 --> 00:22:55.599
coffee table, He said. Brenda
is an excellent mother and her mother,
265
00:22:55.759 --> 00:23:00.480
bre Linda takes good care of the
children. From everything we've earned up to
266
00:23:00.519 --> 00:23:03.759
this point, it shouldn't be much
of a surprise to hear John avoid responsibility
267
00:23:03.799 --> 00:23:08.839
for Jacob's death. It's also not
surprising to hear him describe multiple incidents in
268
00:23:08.839 --> 00:23:14.960
which Eric had been the one to
Jacob. But what was surprising to me
269
00:23:15.559 --> 00:23:18.720
is that when I first read Brenda's
interview with police, she described the same
270
00:23:18.759 --> 00:23:25.279
things she said Eric had kicked Jacob, and then in Merlinda's interview, who
271
00:23:25.400 --> 00:23:30.200
is Brenda's mother, Eric's grandmother,
she also describes the same things. She
272
00:23:30.240 --> 00:23:34.759
says that Eric had kicked Jacob in
the head and that Eric was jealous of
273
00:23:34.799 --> 00:23:41.400
his baby brother. I was suddenly
faced with a dilemma. Everything I knew
274
00:23:41.440 --> 00:23:45.319
up to this point told me that
Eric was in no way responsible for the
275
00:23:45.359 --> 00:23:48.119
death of his brother. But now
I was staring at interviews with his mother
276
00:23:48.279 --> 00:23:53.039
and grandmother, who had no reason
to lie, saying that Eric had kicked
277
00:23:53.079 --> 00:23:57.200
his brother in the head. Though
on the other hand, even if that
278
00:23:57.440 --> 00:24:02.359
was true, Eric was in another
state at the time of Jacob's death.
279
00:24:02.799 --> 00:24:07.559
It seemed like a stretch to me
that a six year old living in another
280
00:24:07.599 --> 00:24:12.400
state could in any way be responsible
for the death of this baby. But
281
00:24:12.599 --> 00:24:18.759
in my attempts to remain a neutral
third party and to get the truth,
282
00:24:18.440 --> 00:24:25.400
and decided to ask Eric directly about
this. Here my raw exchange with Eric
283
00:24:25.440 --> 00:24:30.319
Carter Landine on the next episode of
Tapes from the Dark Side. And you
284
00:24:30.400 --> 00:24:36.319
had one memory of kicking or correct
me if I'm wrong, but I think
285
00:24:36.359 --> 00:24:41.119
you said you had a memory of
kicking Jacob one time. Yeah, can
286
00:24:41.160 --> 00:24:45.440
you tell us what you remember from
that? We were laying on the floor
287
00:24:45.920 --> 00:25:06.400
and Episode two in the Jacob Lendine
Story will be released next week, though
288
00:25:06.440 --> 00:25:11.119
it's available right now on Patreon,
as well as all four episodes of this
289
00:25:11.160 --> 00:25:17.759
season, plus all early releases for
future episodes. Thank you to everyone who
290
00:25:17.759 --> 00:25:22.759
supports me on Patreon. I really
couldn't do this without you guys. I
291
00:25:22.880 --> 00:25:27.640
know financially times are really tough right
now with inflation and the rental market being
292
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:33.079
crazy, the housing market being crazy. So if you can't afford to subscribe
293
00:25:33.079 --> 00:25:40.200
to me on Patreon, please don't. If there's any bonus episode that you
294
00:25:40.400 --> 00:25:44.599
want to hear and you can't afford
it, just message me on Instagram at
295
00:25:44.640 --> 00:25:48.119
the dark Side Pod and I'll send
it to you for free. But if
296
00:25:48.200 --> 00:25:52.839
you can afford to give five dollars
a month, then you will get all
297
00:25:52.880 --> 00:25:57.920
the bonus episodes that we have,
and you will get my undying gratitude.
298
00:25:59.799 --> 00:26:03.759
We also read out the names of
our supporters and the credits, which because
299
00:26:03.799 --> 00:26:07.160
the episodes in this season are a
little bit shorter, we're going to wait
300
00:26:07.240 --> 00:26:11.119
until the finale to read out our
Patreon supporters. I just thought that made
301
00:26:11.200 --> 00:26:15.559
sense. Thank you all again so
much. If you want to support me,
302
00:26:15.920 --> 00:26:22.319
go to patreon dot com slash tapes
from the Dark Side, where the
303
00:26:22.480 --> 00:26:26.720
link will be in the show notes. Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight
