I think it's something that everyone secretly longs for. A moves blood or there was blood everywhere. It was kind of I felt kind of like he was looking through me, kind of like a glassy look to the dark side, the dark side, the dark. On Tuesday, June twenty ninth, twenty twenty one, at two oh four pm, a man named Omar Job answered the phone at his job at the Madison Area Technical College helped esk Omar was thirty three years old at the time. He had been working as an enrollment coordinator for the past three years, and he also still helped work at this student services center receiving operator calls. You've been doing that since twenty and thirteen, And on that June day, he just so happened to get a phone call which would land him in court six months later, testifying in a murder case. Sure,

I woke as an enrollment coordinator at Madison College. When you do you get a lot of calls? Yes? Do you remember all of them? No? Are sometimes they recorded? Recently we started recording them, like about like, let's say it two years ago. Okay, last year. You were contacted by the police at some point regarding one of these calls you had? Yes? And did you speak to the police Yes. Did they ask you about a call that you maybe had with someone about Chandler Hall Alderson in July of or sorry June of twenty twenty one. Yes, In fact, at the very end of June June twenty ninth, I believe I remember to date. Yes, I will move four ninety six in evidence, and I'll represent for the record four ninety five to be the call and move the call in evidence as well.

For the degree, you have to download the duplicate diploma phone and send it in what a or a check or money or the four dollars for the diploma to be nailed back to you. And I've spent on how many time doing that and at eight bucks a piece, So I'm not willing to do that again. Why is that letting you the question transcript? What is?

Yeah, And we know bartead numerous suspicions about the stories that his son Chandler was telling him. In fact, it might have been even on the verge of willful ignorance, maybe not quite there, but right on the line. There's a seven second pause when Omar Job tells Bart that his son owes over two thousand dollars in tuition and that this is the reason that he hasn't been able to successfully request a transcript.

8:26 And this is the moment that you can hear in Bart's voice he has to come to terms with what he had probably been suspecting about his son for the past year. The thing is, you know, if you call it, we can walk you through download if you're so chisip. But like I said, the ballins have to be taken care of firs. Yes, okay, I understand that part. I want to point out how long it takes Bart to accept how easy it is to request a transcript. Remember that Bart is an accountant. He's a smart guy. He understands the words that Omar's telling him, but he just can't believe that it's that simple. One last thing that I think got lost a little bit in my coverage is just the sheer volume of emails that went back

10:56 and forth between Chandler and Aaron Hoover and Daniel Speith and Alyssa Brandt. This was almost a full year of emails, hundreds of emails. Now I can tell that in the back of Bart's mind he's still holding out an ounce of hope that perhaps this is all just some kind of strange misunderstanding. But as this conversation progresses, the options are quickly narrowing. Either this man Omar job is entirely mistaken, or the alternative that his son had been lying to him almost every day for the past year. So do I need an appointment or the place? You can just go at your true X field to get that.

Okay, Now, if you've earned a certificate saying that solar program, you said the word as I getting requested to if you earned a certificate. Yeah, I don't I don't see that you earned a certificate there they were really you were taking IT classes, right, I don't see that you were in the program prior to the IT there was a solar program too. Yeah, but I don't see that. Chandler and your dit avert is my fifteen ninety eight. Yeah, but I don't see that you were a man, I'm a hard time here. You said, I don't see that you were admitted in any program. So you said they were. You know, the IT degree is in there, right.

Bart Holderson was suddenly privy to a number of laws that his son had been feed him over the past two years, the first of which was that his son still owed the college two thousand, three hundred and forty nine dollars intuition, this being the reason that his transcript request couldn't be fulfilled. And in the phone call you can hear Bart start to internalize this, digest it, and he begins to wonder what other lies his son had been telling him.

17:23 The people that he claimed were helping him and his father obtain his transcripts. Alyssa Bryant and Daniel Speith didn't work at MAATC. They were not even in the employee directory. And perhaps the most crushing blow of all, Chandler wasn't even enrolled in a program or what we might call a major, meaning he'd obtained no degree. Bart Alderson hung up the phone at two twenty six pm, and exactly one hour and one minute later texted his son Chandler. He said, quote to Omar Joe, we'll later find out exactly how Chandler responded to this news. But for now, let's examine the academic record of Chandler Alderson, because we now have the transcripts that Bart never got a chance to see, and what they show us about Chandler's academic career is quite interesting.

18:26 In spring of twenty eighteen, Chandler was enrolled for the first time as a student at Madison Area Technical College. He signed up for four classes, which is on the lower end of a course load, but it's still a full semester. Though he immediately withdrew from physics, this left Chandler with nine attempted credit hours. Just to give you an idea if you're not familiar, fifteen credit hours is an average courseload. Eighteen is on the upper end, and if you're extremely ambitious, you can attempt maybe twenty one to twenty four hours, though it's not recommended. Twelve credit hours is about the low end of what is generally considered a full time student in nine credit hours is not even full time. His highest grade that semester was the class of Leadership as an Art, which he received a B. In trigonometry, Chandler received a C and in solar Technology Chandler received a C. His term GPA for that semester was a two point three. Chandler signed up for summer classes, attempting chemistry, statistics and a solar installation lab. The chemistry class he got a recorded B C, which is apparently right between a B and a C, which I had never heard of. I thought it was either a B plus or a C minus, but apparently there's a BC. Statistics he withdrew from, and in his solar lab he got an A, raising his GPA to

19:59 its all time high of two point eight. From this point on, Chandler's grades would be nothing short of a disaster. Fall of twenty eighteen, Chandler signed up for Intro to Sustainable Design Statistics again and Intro to Renewable Energy. He withdrew from the Renewable Energy course. He got an F in statistics and an A in his Intro to Design. His cumulative GPA fell to two point one point five. In his first full year of college, Chandler had passed a total of sixteen credit hours, meaning he would be far behind schedule if he wanted to graduate on time. In the spring of twenty nineteen, Chandler continued on this dismal path. Environmental Science he withdrew, Project Management fund he got to see whether in climate he withdrew, and ACDC Electronics he withdrew, completing only three credit hours. His cumulative GPA once again fell to two point one three. And then we have the Fall of twenty nineteen, Chandler's most spectacular semester. Now there's an acronym on the transcripts WNA, which means withdrew with no attempt, And during the trial they explain that if the class was dropped within the first ten days or so, there was no penalty to a

21:29 student's GPA. Chandler wna'd three classes, Intermediate Word Processing, Beginner's Word Processing, and Written Communication. The remaining five classes that he took he recorded an f for each class, Exploration of Information Technology, Intro to Cisco Networking, IT, Security Awareness, Enterprise Client and Psychology of Human Relations. Now, curiously, the spring of twenty twenty, Chandler did not attempt a single class. This lines up exactly with the beginning of the COVID nineteen outbreak. So initially I thought that maybe MATC had canceled classes for that semester, but after further research, it appears that this is not the case. MAATC moved their classes online, as did almost every college across America. I even pose the question on an Internet forum, and an anonymous student claims to have attended classes at MATC for that semester Spring twenty twenty. Now, we don't know specifically whether Chandler hid this fact from his parents or his girlfriend, but what we do know definitively is that Chandler did not enroll, attend, or attempt a single class for the twenty twenty spring semester. The Fall of twenty twenty Chandler's

23:00 last semester, but he had only completed nineteen credit hours. If he wanted to graduate, he would have to make up almost a year and a half of schooling in one semester. Chandler withdrew with no attempt from Office three sixty five word beginning Exploration of Information Technology IT, Security Awareness and Enterprise Client. He again attempted Intro to Cisco Networking and the course Psychology of Human Relations, which he again recorded an F in both courses. Chandler finished his Fall twenty twenty semester with still only nineteen credit hours completed in the exact same GPA of one point four to four. A one point four gpa is equivalent to a sixty nine percent or a D plus. Talk about a couple of docents that are already in evidence. This morning, Detective Blank testified about this small burner phone. And this was the burner phone I think mister Selzner testified was found in channel Helderson's desk. Correct, the Elcatel flip phone, Okay, And he produced a report when he tried to download when he could download there indicating a cell phone number for that phone. Correct, and what was that cell phone number? Six oh eight five nine eight seven eight six eight. And

24:33 earlier in the trial a couple weeks ago, we passed around this document to the jury. Was I believe testified in this case to be a paper found on the desk of bart Halderson with some written notes on it giving a phone number for someone bart Alderson spoke to at M ATC who was the person he believes he spoke to. Correct. This is an email that bart Helderson had saying that he had spoken with Danny Speith. At the bottom of I'm sorry and part of the body of that he does say that Daniel sounds just like Chaz who we know is what the family called Chandler on the phone. The bottom of this email says Daniel's contact information is Sell six zero eight five nine eight seven eight six' eight, which is the same phone number I as read, which is registered to the flip phone. So the Burner phone found in the desk is the same as the email that the jury looked at with that phone number. Correct. Okay, were you employed? I work for Madison College? And specifically, what is your title? The director of employee Relations? And were you able to look in the database or some historic information to see if Aaron Hoover had ever worked for Madison College or m ATC.

25:48 I was able to look and was Aaron Hoover ever an employee? No? Were you able to repeat the same process with Alyssa Brand? Yes? And you did that in fact with two different spellings br n T and br A and d T that's correct? And was she ever an employee for m ATC or Madison College? No? What about Daniel speF Was he ever an employee for Madison College or m ATC. No? Can I ask you what is the end part of every employee's email? Who works for Madison College? Madison College dot edu. No one uses a Gmail account is their official Madison College email. No, no further questions. So how exactly had Chandler Holderson, who had a d average over nineteen credit hours, not even having graduated community college, get a job with SpaceX? Well, the answer is quite simple, ladies and gentlemen. Before we proceed with another witness, I have to read to you another agreed fact, something that the parties have stipulated to that you must accept as proven. Specifically, in this case, the district attorney and the defendant's attorneys have stipulated to the following facts. Chandler Alderson has never been employed by SpaceX or sought a job at that company. Please proceed.

27:26 Chandler had no job at SpaceX, he had never graduated college. But what about the internship that he had while he was in college, the one with American Family. Remember that this internship with American Family was a paid internship. Chandler was owed thousands of dollars in back pay because he was accidentally listed by the company as an hourly employee when he was supposed to be getting paid salary, and then when they tried to send him his payment, the bank rejected it because it was flagged for fraud. This is another situation where Chandler traded dozens of emails, this time with a man named Tom Selznick. How are you employed, miss Snap, I work for American Family Insurance and what is your title? Employee relations manager? And sometime this summer or into the fall, were you contacted by Dane County Sheriff's Office in connection to this case?

28:30 Yes? I was? And in particular, did they ask you to research whether or not Chandler Holderson was ever employed by American Family? Yes? They did, and what did you find out? I found no record of that person working for American Family. What about as one of their contractors? Did you ever? Did you research that? I did as well, and we found no record of that person working as a contractor. Also, have you researched whether or not Tom Selznick was ever an employee of American Family? Yes? They did, and was he ever an employee or a contract employee?

What about working as a scuba diver on the rescue team for the local police, Mister Gravat, do you know somebody by the name of Chandler Helderson. I do know Chandler Holderson. And how do you know mister Halderson?

Okay, Well, I knew in high school he was a diver, but then he loved to swim, and from my understanding, he joined the Madison Police diving team for search and rescue missions. I know he'd gone a few times with them, to my knowledge, but I never went with him or dropped him off or saw anything. Did he ever tell you about any of his search and rescue missions? Yes, he told me a couple of times about getting caught in riptides, and one time he said that he saw a body while doing it well, while scuba diving, and that he was a little weirded out by that. Did he ever bring home any momentos or anything he found while scuba diving. Yes, I know there was one time he brought home a large pink sex toy that he found. And then there was one time I believe he brought home like an old, rusty looking knife. And were these from his scuba diving missions with the Madison Police Department? And how are you employed with the City Madison Police Department? In what role? I'm the Assistant Chief of Operations. In the realm of ranks of police officers, you're

Is someone named Chandler Holderson ever been employed by the Madison Police to your knowledge? No. No for the questions, cross examination, no, thank you made this witness be excused and released. Yes, I've had this reoccurring throughout my life, even now in my mid thirties, I'll still have it once in a while, a handful of times throughout the year, usually when I'm procrastinating on something, I'm walking through the halls of a nondescript generic school. Sometimes it's a high school, sometimes it's a college, and I'm looking for a class. When I find the door, I walk in and realize that it's the last day of the semester and I have yet to attend a single class or complete a single assignment. It's not exactly a nightmare, but it's not a good dream.

32:38 I usually wake up with a pit in my stomach, followed by a feeling of relief. Now I can't tell you exactly why I have this dream, and I've learned that if your psychotherapist can tell you the exact meaning behind your dreams, then it's probably time for a new therapist. But if I had to venture a guess, it's my subconscious working something out, usually something in my life that I'm repressing. I can only imagine with the secrets that Chandler Alderson was keeping, the kind of dreams that he dreamed at night.

Last episode, we talked about a fall that Chandler had in the month of June in twenty twenty one, this fall being a primary motivator for him losing the job at SpaceX. But if Chandler never had a job at SpaceX, then how did the fall even play into that. What would be the point of making up getting a job and then losing a job. It sounds so convoluted that it's hard to tell what even true and what is false. And so investigators decided to track down the doctor that Chandler claimed to have seen, who was in fact a real doctor, doctor Michael Lohmyer, who's working in the emergency room at UW Health at the East Madison Hospital. Remember, Chandler said that doctor Lomyer told him that he would need brain surgery, he would need to wear a colonoscopy bag twenty four to seven, and he might even be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. My name is Michael Lomyer. I'm an emergency physician at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, and you're an er physician.

34:42 So you have an MDH Yes, ma'am, that's correct. Okay, So, on June seventeenth of twenty twenty one, did you in fact see a patient named Chandler Halderson. Yes, ma'am, I did so. Do you know about what time of day you saw mister Halderson on June seventeenth. I believe it was around noon. And had you met him before this day? I don't believe, so no, Okay, what symptoms did he present with? I believe he was complaining of some pain to his head and his right ribs after a reported fall down some stairs. So what did you do in your treatment at that time? My physician assistant went and evaluated the patient.

35:24 First, he came up with a treatment plan. We discussed it and then got some imaging. Okay, what imaging did you get? We got a CT scan, a CAT scan of his head and his c spin and a cerphical spine, and what if anything did that imaging reveal? Those images were reported as being negative without abnormality. Did you perform any other tests? So he had a physical exam, during which the PA and I both did an abbreviated physical exam looking for any signs of injury. We did discuss with the patient a potential X ray of his ribs because he was having some right sided chest tenderness at that time. The patient declined the additional imaging, and I think about that time we closed the encounter. I believe for this case, the patient had some residual neck pain, so he was given a caller to go home with for support, with instruction to follow up with his primary care physician and with the spying team that was on call. Is it unusual for you to hand out neck brace or neck collar with somebody who says, hey, my neck is hurting. No, ma'am, it is not unusual at all. And you said diagnosis of a mild or moderate concussion. What in this case did you diagnose mister Halderson with. I believe he was diagnosed as having a mild concussion, and I believe in the notes it reported him

36:58 as having just a chi a CLIs had injury, so a nonspecific diagnosis. At any point in time during your visit with mister Halderson, did you tell him he was going to experience paralysis, No, ma'am. At any point during your time with mister Halderson, did you tell him that he had a brain bleed, No, ma'am. At any point during your appointment with mister Halderson, did you at any point tell him that he had a brain aneurysm. No, ma'am. At any point did you tell him that he had nerve damage? I don't believe so, No, ma'am. At any point, did you tell him he had a spinal injury, No, I don't believe so. At any point, did you advise him that he should not fly in an airplane, No, ma'am. At any point, did you tell him that he should not drive? I don't believe so. No.

37:58 At any point did you ever say that he shouldn't drive long distances? I know, ma'am. At any point, did you tell him that he had a hematoma in his brain? I know, ma'am. I did not. At any point, did you tell him that he would have an inability to use his legs in a normal manner, No, ma'am. At any point, did you tell him, because of his mild concussion, that he was going to have to have a colostomy bag, No, ma'am. And just to be clear, that's a bag for poop. That's correct. At any point in time, did you have to drill a hole into his head? I know, ma'am. At any point in time, did you tell him that he was going to have to have surgery where a hole would be drilled in his head.
