S11, Chapter 13: Body In Absentia

0:04 Tapes from the Dark Side contains descriptions of violence and sexuality. Listener discretion is advised. When police had finally finished searching the Halderson family fireplace in the connecting ash trap, they had a mountain of evidence. They had pieces of bone, they had piles upon piles of ash, and they even had teeth. Yet, despite all this evidence that they had found, there was a lot that these items didn't tell them. Many of the bones were not able to be identified as human bones, and the teeth that were found were not able to be matched to any dental records of Bart or Christa. In the previous episode, we learned that when police pulled dental records, they usually used the positioning of the teeth in those records to match them to a potential victim. One or two singular teeth is usually not much help. Detectives were in a bit of a conundrum. They didn't even know how much of Bart and Christa were burned in the fireplace, which means they didn't know how much of their bodies might still be out there. Now, we do have Bart Holderson's torso that was found wrapped up in a tarp on Cress's farm, a tarp that happened to match the

1:36 description of one that Chandler Holderson had purchased at Fleet Farm on camera on July second. Chandler was not able to chop up his parents' torsos into small enough pieces to fit in the fireplace, and so if we had recovered Bart's torso, there was one glaring question, where was Christa's torso let's quickly revisit the timeline. Chandler murdered his parents on July first, shooting them in the back with a semi automatic rifle. He then burned their bodies in the family fireplace on the night of July first, all the way into the early morning hours of July second.

2:22 On July second, he bought a tarp at Fleet Farm, and later that day, at eight twenty two pm, Chandler bought a large bag of ice at a quick trip. He was also caught on video making this purchase. That same night, July second, Catherine Melender, Chandler's girlfriend, came over to spend the night. She slept feet away from the bodies of Bart and Christa that lay beneath her in a cooler on ice, all while Chandler tried to figure out what in the world he was going to do with them. And so when you were at his house, we kind of I mean, you went through a lot of stuff what you did there, which was pretty thorough.

3:08 Did you where did you go in the house? Do you remember specifically where you went. Upstairs, living room, kitchen, you know, the downstairs living room, bathroom, anywhere else that you can think of. Garage. I didn't go in the garage and the basement. At all, not the basement though, Kat says that she never went in the basement or in the garage, but she did know it to a curious smoky smell on Chandler that day when you got. To the house. Did you notice any any smells that were odd to you or different?

3:54 There was a smoky smell, but I thought it was because of the fireplace, like it being opened, and like you said, there was ash so and you know, they loved using that stuff, and he used the grill to make like some burgers for us, and that's why I picked. Up buns and like the. Pepper jack cheese and you know, wine rolls and like also watermelon, and so I thought it was that's where the smoky smell. Is coming from from. The grill or the fireplace in the house. From the fireplace, I don't know if the smell came in from the ground, mostly smell just like fireplace. Okay, Ash and some of the girls outside. Then, So did you see the fireplace? What did it look like like? Broken?

4:49 It was like one pain I think on the left side. Yeah. And did you see like the blood in the glass? Was that all put it up? It was pretty much all picked up, except like a little bit of glass was still there. Honestly, I didn't see like a lot of blood, but probably because it was only a cut on his big toe. Okay, I see it all kind And what was by the fireplace? I assume the blood was by the fireplace? I think so. And I liked see it, you know, or he didn't see the blood.

5:36 Chandler also had a burn on his hand, which is another thing that Kat remembers. Burned his hand. Yeah, did you see that happen? No, he finished making the burgers before I got there. Okay. He said he'd only used the grill like maybe three times beforehand and then burn his hand trying to do it. Sure, did you see where has not really maybe like this area? But I don't really. Specifically recall all during that fourth of July weekend, Kad and Chandler were both picking up bags of ice for the large chest cooler in the basement. Of course, Chandler had an explanation for why this ice was needed.

6:19 Did you ever have to buy ice? Uh? Yeah, I. July third he picked up some ice because he said the their ice machine in the basement was broken, and so. Yeah, I got I ordered some ice for pickup on. The July third, which was Saturday, and he did that pickup. But on Target the app you can add a pickup person. But he also has my Target app on his phone and he's also picked up some jalapeno peppers slice pickled.

7:01 It's really good. I drink the juice. But you can see the pick. A person Katherine Mellinder Chandler Holderson East And you also want to scratch out on that one. Please, what time was the ten thirty six am? How much ice did you order? It's the seven pound bag. The dollar fifty nine has it in the receipt you'll see it, my son and o. Kat offers her phone to the detectives at this point, and although we can't see the screen, we can guess it's a copy of the target receipt. This is something that Kat does throughout her interrogation. We've already heard her do it a couple times before. Her willingness to offer evidence of her actions throughout her interview stands in stark contrast to that of Chandler, whose interview we now know turns out much different than Kat's. Kat's stories all check out.

8:00 They're based in fact, and they're verifiable. Chandler's version of events, on the other hand, is based on lies, deception, and the false reality that he's created for himself and in which he had been living the majority, if not the entirety, of his adult life. Have you just curious the ice causine that's in the basement. Have you seen that? Yeah, it's like one of those Is it a counter one or is it built in or. It's like a counter one. So they have like two freezers because missus holderson overvies and she would just put some in the freezer. This her favorite thing. But they have this drink fridge type thingy m, like that's where they keep.

8:43 Their beers and like SODA's like a little fridge. Yeah, and then it was sat on top of the last time I saw it, okay, because I've seen them where if you can. Actually have them built in the counter like these huge ice makers and fancier houses, you know. And I didn't know if that's what they had or just a countertop one or our top one. Yeah, since they were doing so much modeling, I thought that we'd want to put something in. Okay, it's one of those countertop ones, and that works fine. He said it was broken, and that's. Why he follows that. I too, and the ice maker up on the freezer or upstairs. Yeah, they're both were broken. Yeah, that's all I said. Okay.

9:27 It's July third, two thousand and twenty one, a Saturday. It's been roughly twenty four hours since Chandler's chopped up his parents and burned their heads, hands, and knees in his fireplace. Chandler and Cats are texting, and Chandler says he's going to the dump, except never mind because it's closed. Should I start at the top of Saturday? So we were like talking at seven thirty two, and I asked breakfast brutal question mark because I was. Making a breakfast for when he was done with chor so. It sounds good. I'm doing shit kind of slow TV because I'm kind of sore. I'm like, I could have helped you this morning. It so yeah, I know I'm going to the dump.

10:07 I'm like, by yourself, did you low the car? By yourself? You can barely walk. I should have at least helped with that. It's like, never mind as cloed, I'm like, oh yeah, holiday weekend and shit. According to Chandler, the dump was closed because it was the fourth of July weekend. But to better understand what actually happened this day, it's easier if we work from a timeline, which took me a little while to piece together. But here's what I came up with after listening through Kat's interviews with police multiple times. So Friday, July second, Kat spent the night at the Halderson house with Chandler. They slept on the couches in the living room, likely because Chandler wanted to keep an eye on Kat at all times to make sure she didn't go in the basement.

10:54 Then Saturday, July third, Chandler and Kat wake up and Chandler tells cadd he has chores to do. Kat talks about these so called chores in another one of her police interviews and again mentions the local landfill, whereas we say colloquially in the USA dump. I was there and. Then I left in the morning because he wanted to do chores. And then I know what time I around the time I was home to a picture. Do you know what the chores were? Like? What does that mean? Chores? Like his family usually gets my housework, Like you know the grass outside the front of his house usually has to take that to the dump, probably make sure all the remaining glasses up, you know, do his laundry.

11:44 Do you know what did he go to the dump? I think he said he wanted it was closed or that they were just closed. I don't know if he drove all the way there. And then. Oh time stand sorry. So on your Snapchat, do you manually enter your location or is it just through. Your whenever you open Snapchat it has your location? Okay, yeah, unless you turn it off. And so on Saturday, I was with my dog at eight fifty three am. Investigators were wondering exactly what you're probably wondering. Might Chandler have gone to the dump even if it was closed?

12:32 And what exactly was he disposing of, perhaps something other than grass clippings. Investigation into Bart Holderson's homicide and Krystal Holderson's disappearance now stretches into Jefferson County. I'll take a quick break, and when we come back. Tony Galli has more from a landfill where investigators have been conducting a search. Don't go anywhere. Police spent days searching for Christa's body at the town Dump, a waste management landfill that was just outside of Johnson Creek. Johnson Creek is a small town about forty miles east of Madison, Wisconsin, and it would have been a decent drive for Chandler from his parents' house about forty minutes Saturday, July third. The waste management site actually would have been closed, not because of the holiday, but because that particular site was closed every Saturday.

13:39 Could Chandler have snuck into the dump on the off day? Christa Halderson remains missing now. A spokesperson says deputies, along with the canine teams from the Madison Police Department, have been searching the landfill for several days. Haller's using the landfill here tell me that law enforcement work involves the use of an excavator and involves a relatively small area. Sheriff's officials say nothing about what tipped them off to a garbage offload here containing possibly something related to the Holderson investigation. They had multiple people searching through piles upon piles of trash, excavators moving piles of trash, and yet their search was in vain. The Dane County Sheriff's Office announced that they found nothing at the dump, but there was another key location that police had yet to cross off their list.

14:39 Remember the pond that lay between the Halderson house and the neighbor who had the outdoor camera by his pool, the camera that caught Chandler burning his parents' heads in the fireplace. Well, that pond would make for an awfully convenient location for Chandler to dump his mother's body. Now, there was no evidence on any security footage that they could find of Chandler approaching the pond, But could he have made it down there from an area that wasn't on camera. It was simply too much of a possibility to rule out without first searching. The search for evidence in the Holderson case is back at their home this afternoon, but the search has shifted to behind it.

15:20 The Dane County Sheriff's Office is looking in the pond outside of the home in Windsor. While they were winding down their search of the waste management site, police got busy with a team of canines, a dive team, and some heavy duty machinery to drain the pond from its depths of twelve feet to five feet. That's quite a lot of water. Our Taalil Muldine is live in the neighborhood tonight, Talil, what have you learned then? R The Madison Police and the Dane County Sheriff Office is actually working to lower the level at this pond. They began around two m draining the water into the Ahara River. The SRIB did bring in a cadaver dog earlier today.

16:06 Not specifically sure what the K nine picked up on, but it indicated in a specific area. We marked that area out with the buoys, and that's what we're searching in a very methodical way to ensure that if there's anything of evidence revalue in this area, that we will find it. The science behind cadaver dogs and their use in police investigations is a little bit shaky. I don't know enough about it to really have an opinion either way, but in this particular case, the hit proved to be a false positive. Police found nothing in the pond behind the Halderson house. This would mark six total locations that police had investigated and searched in relation to this case. Let's quickly review each one. First, we have the Halderson house, which we know yielded quite a lot of evidence. Second, we have Cress's property, Cottage Grove, which yielded multiple tools which were used in the dismemberment of Bart Halderson's body, and of course Bart Halderson's headless Torso next up are the three locations that yielded nothing. The first of which it's been a while since we covered, but remember way back when police searched the Halderson vacation cabin up in Langlade County, Chandler concocted the lie that his parents went up there on the fourth of July weekend to gamble.

17:30 The second location that yielded nothing was the landfill at Johnson Creek. The third the pond behind the Halderson house. So that's five total locations that police investigated and searched. So what was the sixth location turned out to be a little piece of land out in Columbia County, Wisconsin, right next to the Wisconsin River. We'll come back to this search as it would prove to be pivotal to this investigation. For now, I want to take you to July eighth, one week after Chandler murdered and dismembered his parents.

18:11 In the day that Chandler was interrogated and formally arrested, Chandler Alderson was taken into custody and charged with providing false information about a missing person. He refused to give investigators access to his phone, and curiously enough, Chandler had told his own family members in the days leading up to his arrest that they didn't need to comply with police officer's requests to search their phones. This is obviously true. The First and fifth Amendments of the Constitution established the right to privacy and emphasized the autonomy of the individual, especially as it relates to the state. But this also doesn't mean you can't volunteer to cooperate with a government agency, especially when it's in the interest of fid your missing parents.

19:02 Chandler was supposed to be playing the part of the worrisome son who was desperate to do anything to find his parents. But just like everything else he had attempted in life up to this point, Chandler failed miserably at this task. He did almost everything you could think of to draw suspicion to himself, which left his family and friends wondering why he was complicating the investigation. I want to play for you some of the testimony of Hannah Hilgendorf. I should note she's actually not technically Chandler's cousin by blood, but her mother was a close friend to Christa in childhood, and this was a friendship that continued well into adulthood.

19:46 Hannah grew up with bart and Christa almost always around, and she looked up to them as her aunt and uncle. When they went missing, she was not only concerned about them, but also about Chandler and his mental health. She thought that he surely must be struggling with the stress and worry that your parents both suddenly going missing would bring. But when Hannah arrived at the Holderson house with groceries for Chandler to cook him up a meal right away, she felt off about the entire situation. My name is Hannah Hilgendorff. How old are you, Hannah? I am twenty five years old. And what do you do for a living? I am a nurse?

20:29 All right? Did you know two people by the name of Bart and Krista Holderson? Yes? How'd you know them? My mom was best friends with Kristo growing up, and then. She met Bart and we've known. They've been a huge part of our lives, our entire life. In fact, you called a man and uncle. Yes, so I said, man, like she has is like home all alone there, you know, like without. Them, like this is so sad. And so we run inside and we had just bought some food to cook. And we were going to go cook it at their house because we're like, let's just go over there now instead of cooking it here, We'll just go run here and say.

21:15 Hello to him. And when we pull in the drive, I just remember like there was the das were there or detectives. I don't know what you guys are, okay, but you guys were there, and then the police, yes, and playing clothes okay, yes, the police. I don't know what they really Okay. So I was like, whoa, this is like crazy, you know, like what is like going on? So we go inside and. Yeah, it's like my mind was just like, this is such a weird situation and I want to not be here at all anymore, Like from the moment I walked in, I didn't want to be there at all or you know.

22:00 So what do you mean when you say it was a weird situation. Well, first off, the police are there, you know, And I didn't know. At all like anything of this caliber could be possibly ever be going on, that I would ever experience this in my life. And the feeling I received from Chandler was different to me than that of. That I normally feel from him, and so it was it's just weird, Okay. You know, I gave him a hug right when I walked in, and it wasn't like, oh my god, good to see you, you know, and I know that his parents were missing and stuff, but it's it was just a different He seemed different than he normally does not, as he's the more like warmer one usually.

22:55 And he was less warm on this occasion. Yeah, I would say less. Warm on the stand. The twenty five year old Hannah is visibly anxious. She wears a facial mask as This trial occurred during the resurgence of the COVID nineteen pandemic in twenty twenty two, and you can probably tell just from the tone of her voice and speech pattern that she is not comfortable in this situation. She makes particular hand movements and intermittent eye contact that further emphasized this point. Yet I want to give her credit because I think Hannah handled herself incredibly well considering the circumstances. Okay, sorry, I get off the beaten path. And then I'm like just telling you that's okay. I know you're incredibly serious. Yes, I'm just weird vibe and this is just not somewhere. I just didn't feel very safe, like I felt. I don't know how to explain it, but this is It's like I'm sitting in the middle of what now seems to be a crime scene with somebody who is acting differently than I'm used to, and it just doesn't feel like a good idea.

24:05 What if anything, did Chandler say about his parents being missing? Okay, he said, you know, in the moment, he told me, you know, they're probably just out of casino. What do you think of that comment? There's no way there's just no way that they are like just the sweetest loving people you ever meet, and there is no way that you know they would have ever put anyone that they love or care about in a situation where they're worried about where they are. You know, She's like, do you need a glass of water? Do you need this? Do you need that? Like very sweet, loving, like carrying people.

24:49 I there is nobody sweeter than those two. Like they're anything that they can do for you, they're going to do it, and they would never put make anybody worried about where they are kind of people, and especially no way to a casino, Like she is a very modest, very kind of shyer person and wouldn't be doing that really. He just kind of questioned me, like should he make a Facebook post? Tell me about that? Well, we sat down and me and my sister went up and we were sitting at the main dining table in the upstairs and he said, I'm.

25:38 Like, I don't know what to do now, like should I make a Facebook post? Like right after the police had left, and I was thinking to myself, I wanted to say, duh, you know, like your parents are missing. It's almost feeling like you have to think about how to act, you know, like if your parents are missing, you you go online, you tell everybody, you go to the police, like the day of especially a no call, no show to work. They would have never done that. So to ask me, you know, what you should do now? And should you make a Facebook post? Like how should you go about this? It's it was just interesting.

26:23 This next clip is the part of Hannah's testimony that stuck with me. What Chandler said about handing their phones over to police. Did Chandler make any comments to you about giving your phones to police? Yeah, that's like the first thing we had discussed. So he said that if a cop ever asks you to take your phone, you do not need to give your phone to them because they you can show them everything that they need without letting them mirror your phone. And that was like one of the first things that he had said to me. That's why I was like, I don't know. I was like, are you kidding me? Your parents are missing?

27:08 Again? In my head, your parents are missing. You had apparently had contact with your parents, which I had learned later down the road talking. To my mother after the fact. It wasn't my thing that I heard of, But I just it's just another thing adding to the story of like, your parents are missing, why don't you let them herror your phone so we can figure out if you had tried to call them, if we could see the location on the phone, or anything like that. And once again I have to point out there was no cross examination, no. Further questions, cross examination, I have nothing. Thank you. May this witness be released and excused? 27:54 Even though police did not and would not gain access to Chandler's phone, they did have access to his girlfriend's found and Kat Melender was eager to help in any way she could.
